DPM Sar Kheng Urges Australian Police to Continue Implementing All Agreements Effectively

PHNOM PENH: Interior Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Sar Kheng, urges the Australian Police to continue to implement all agreements effectively to serve the common interests of the police and the people of both countries.

Addressing the Police Commissioner of the Federal Police of Australia, Reece Philip Kershaw, and his colleagues, on the afternoon of Tuesday, 1 March, DPM Sar Kheng warmly welcomed the Australian Federal Police Commissioner, who is currently visiting the Kingdom of Cambodia to attend the 40th ASEAN-Napol Conference, which Cambodia is hosting.

The meeting between the Cambodia Interior Minister and the Australian Police Commissioner particularly concerned police training and cooperation between the two countries, and the Cambodian and Australian sides also exchanged other relevant information with each other. DPM Sar Kheng also expressed his support for the outcome on the talks between the Commissioner General of the National Police of Cambodia, General Neth Savoeun, Police Commissioner Reece Philip Kershaw, who met on Tuesday (1 March) to also discuss the support of police training, especially the transfer of skills and knowledge of the Australian police to assist the Cambodian police in the fight against crime within both a regional and global framework, and including crimes against technology and money laundering.

DPM Sar Kheng praised the cooperation between the two countries in the past, especially the implementation of agreements and memorandums that are still in force. At the same time, he urged the two sides to continue implementing all agreements effectively and, in particular, to examine the possibility of signing additional agreements on cooperation in areas that are deemed necessary to serve the common good of the police of both countries and the people. He further reminded that Cambodia has cracked down on many drug crimes in the past and also has received cooperation on this matter from the Australian side.

DPM Sar Kheng also extended his thanks to the Australian Government for its contribution to Cambodia’s Covid-19 vaccination campaign. He said that although the number of Covid-19 cases in the Kingdom has risen recently, the mortality rate has been low.

The Police Commissioner of the Federation of Australia thanked DPM Sar Kheng for allowing him to pay a courtesy call at this time and confirmed to him about the results of the talks with Commissioner General Neth Savoeun. He added Australia will continue to help train the Cambodian police, especially in the fight against crime.
