Post-Covid Economic Recovery a Major Topic at ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting

Phnom Penh: The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, spoke at a press conference after the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and said that economic recovery after the Covid-19 crisis was a major topic of discussion among the ASEAN Foreign Ministers.

He added that since most ASEAN countries rely on tourism, the Foreign Ministers discussed different ways to revive the economy, especially within the framework of the ASEAN Economic Community.

He stated that other hot topics discussed included the establishment of a comprehensive partnership with ASEAN, geopolitical competition, strengthening ASEAN's overall capacity, and especially the current ongoing issue with Myanmar.

The ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (also known as the AMM Retreat) took place on Thursday, 17 February 2022, at the Sofitel Hotel in Phnom Penh Cambodia. The meeting was held in hybrid format, both in person and over live video conference. Out of the 10 ASEAN Member countries, six Foreign Ministers attended in person, while Thailand and Brunei confirmed their participation online. For Myanmar, no official representative was assigned to attend, but the country asked to simply observe the meeting online.
