Cambodia Vows not to Build More Coal-Fired Power Plants

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Mines and Energy, Mr. Suy Sem has confirmed Cambodia's position to increase the use of renewable energy sources and other energy sources that are not harmful to the environment and the decision not to develop new coal-fired power plants.

During a working meeting with the Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, Mr. Mikami Masahiro, Minister of Mines and Energy of Cambodia, Mr. Suy Sem has stated that Cambodia is committed to joining the world in responding to climate change by not building new coal plants . He has said the ministry has now pushed for increased use of renewable energy sources and other energy sources to replace energy sources that have previously harmed the environment.

Mr. Suy Sem has asked the Japanese Ambassador to help promote and mobilize more Japanese investment companies in Cambodia on the power plant development project and the transmission line project, as well as continue to provide technical assistance and additional training projects to ministry officials.

The two sides will also hold regular technical dialogues for cooperation in the field of electricity, to share information updates and enhance cooperation for regional energy transition projects.
