Japan Asks Cambodia to Consider Using Plastic Waste Recycling Technology to Build Concrete Roads

PHNOM PENH: IKEE Japan CEO, Shu Nishiyama has asked Cambodia to consider using a new type of machinery capable of processing plastic waste into concrete (AC) for road construction in Cambodia.

Mr. Shu Nishiyama has said this in a meeting with the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol in a meeting on Tuesday,25 January, 2022 at the Ministry.

Mr. Shu Nishiyama has also said that the application of technology to convert plastic waste into rubber concrete is suitable and can be used in the situation of Cambodia with a lot of rain for a long time, which can ensure the waterproofing and make the road long lasting as well.

In response, Mr. Sun Chanthol has advised the company to check the situation in Cambodia carefully before deciding on the import of new technology, especially to check the waste in Cambodia, which does not have the classification of waste can cause complications in the supply for processing recycle waste collection as well.

However, Mr. Sun Chanthol has still expressed support for the initiative to bring this new technology to participate in maintaining a clean environment.

He has also asked the company to conduct a detailed study on the amount of plastics in Cambodia, how much can be supplied for processing, and stated that the price of the product should not exceed the price of reinforced concrete (AC) currently in use. Currently, environmental impact issues need to be studied in comparison with the use of rubber concrete.
