Cambodia, Morocco Vow to Boost Trade

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cambodia, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhon, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs for African Cooperation and Moroccan Immigration of the Kingdom of Morocco, Nasser Bourita, have pledged and shared their views on seeking cooperation in various fields to boost the economy and the volume of trade between the two countries is still low.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on 26 January, the two Foreign Ministers have exchanged views on bilateral, regional and international relations in the common interest. Both agreed to strengthen and expand bilateral cooperation in various fields, including trade and investment, tourism, education and human resource development, and agreed to hold the third political consultation meeting between the two countries via video in the first half of 2022.

In addition, the two sides have also agreed to expedite the negotiation of an agreement not yet signed, an agreement on aviation services between the two countries, and to consider the signing of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in tourism between the two countries. Both aimed to boost tourism, while the Cambodian Foreign Minister also mentioned the possibility of establishing an alliance city between the two countries.

Mr. Prak Sokhon also thanked the Moroccan side for providing scholarships to Cambodian diplomats and Cambodian students to study in Morocco and to promote the cooperation between the National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations (NIDIR) Cambodia and the Academy of Diplomacy. The Moroccan Foreign Minister has backed Cambodia for leading ASEAN this year and reaffirmed Morocco's commitment to serve as a bridge between Cambodia and Africa and the Middle East to boost bilateral cooperation with Cambodia also other ASEAN countries.

According to data from The Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), in 2019, Cambodia has exported $ 10.6 million worth of products to Morocco, while Cambodia imported more than $230,000 worth of goods from Morocco.
