Minister of Public Works to Promote the Widespread Use of Electric Vehicles to Contribute to Reducing Carbon Emissions

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Public Works and Transport, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, highlighted the Ministry’s highly responsible commitment to promoting the widespread use of electric vehicles, especially in support of policies for electric vehicles (EV) in Cambodia to contribute to reducing carbon emissions into the Earth's atmosphere.

The Senior Minister made this announcement during a courtesy call and discussion with the delegation of the Cambodian Automotive Industry Federation (CAIF) led by the President of the Federation and Vice President of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Tan Monivann, accompanied by the CEO of HGB Group, Peter Brongers, the CEO of Mercedes, James Zemke, the Chief Financial Officer of HGB Group, Hy Ramy, and the CEO of CAIF, Soeun Dara, on 24 January 2022 at the Ministry of Public Works.

He stated that the Royal Government is open to both local and foreign investments in the development of infrastructure for the operation of electric vehicles, road transport policy to promote the use of electric vehicles (EV) to contribute to reducing carbon emissions, cooperation between the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and UNDP (United Nations Development Program) to install five EV charging stations located at the Office of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and some capitals and provinces, and plans to install EV charging stations in 10 locations in collaboration with the private sector.

During this meeting, the delegation of CAIF requested the Ministry to help review and coordinate technical work related to the installation of common standard equipment that allows all types of electric vehicles to charge at any charging station, and a policy for electric vehicles was also proposed.

The Senior Minister advised the federation to work closely with relevant officials under the Ministry to solve the problems that the federation has successfully raised in order to encourage the widespread use of electric vehicles and attract high attention from the private sector as well as the general public.
