Syrian Democratic Forces Clash with IS Militants After Prison Break


INTERNATIONAL: A Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces firing at Al Sinaa prison on Saturday , January 22, after they have repelled an Islamic State attack to break out inmates, with the support of air strikes by a U.S.-led coalition.

Bodies were seen left on the pavement as SDF affiliates have clashed with what were said to be Islamic State militants.

Islamic State has said via Telegram its militants had waged a wide-scale attack on the prison in northeastern Syria since Thursday night ,January 20, and that clashes were ongoing nearby and in other neighbourhoods.

Gweiran prison, in the city of Hassakeh, is believed to house more than 5,000 suspected Islamic State militants, including hundreds of children,mostly Arab detainees ranging from suspected militants to civilians in conditions civic groups say are inhumane with severe overcrowding.

IS fighters used vehicles and explosives to ram through the prison walls before entering the building with heavy machine guns late last week.

Prison inmates rioted and some took Kurdish guards hostage, while a number of other prison staff were killed.

Syrian Kurdish forces initially said they had defeated the fighters but they later acknowledged that inmates had taken over part of the prison.

Some of the militants staged another attack on the prison on Sunday to try to help members of the group still in charge of parts of the facility.

SDF General Commander Mazloum Abdi has said that "the area around the prison was completely surrounded and all fugitives were arrested."

In Washington, the Pentagon has confirmed the U.S.-led coalition had carried out air strikes in support of the SDF as it dealt with the prison break.

A military source in the Kurdish-led forces said they killed 23 Islamic State militants, including foreigners, in the clashes after the jihadist group attempted to free prisoners from the jail in Hasaka.

Residents of the Ghweiran area in the prison's vicinity said intermittent fighting continued in parts of the neighbourhood, were some of the fleeing prisoners who had taken shelter remain. Gweiran prison, in the city of Hassakeh, is believed to house more than 3,000 suspected Islamic State militants, including hundreds of children.

At least five civilians were killed during a security operation mounted by Kurdish forces in residential areas around the prison, community elders said.

Seven members of the SDF and an allied security force called the Asayish were killed in the attack, the SDF military source has confirmed . The SDF said it had detained 89 militants in the area of the prison.

Congressmen Fight During Session on Floor of Honduran Congress


A fight broke out between congress members of Honduras' president-elect Xiomara Castro's party during a congress session on Friday ,January 21.

Members of the Free Party have fought amongst themselves after congressman Jorge Calix was elected as Congress president instead of Luis Redondo. Castro had agreed with the ally party, Honduras Saviour Party, that Redondo would be elected for that position.

Nevertheless, 20 of Free Party's congress members have voted against Redondo.

Preseident-elect Castro has said, "The treason has been consummated."

Inside the Congress floor, Free Party members have chanted "Xiomara" and "Traitors!"

Free party congressman, Jary Dixon says the assault on the Congress was planned yesterday, they were assembled with the nationalists and left behind their peers, their friends, their president, and their coordinator.

Castro will take office as president next week on January 27, amidst internal tensions within her party.

Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger Involved in Four-Car Crash in LA


And….Action movie star Arnold Schwarzengger was involved in a car crash on Friday,January 21 that resulted in one person being taken to the hospital with minor injuries, as reported by by police. The 74-year old former governor of California and the “terminator” was not injured in the multi-vehicle collision which involved his GMC Yukon, a red Toyota Prius and two other vehicles.

There were no arrests made.The statement from the LAPD says neither alcohol or drugs are suspected as a factor in this collision, but did not mention the cause of the crash.

A spokesman has said Arnold Schwarzenegger was fine after being involved in a car crash that sent a woman to the hospital with minor injuries.
