Fire Kills Six at Spanish Retirement Home

INTERNATIONAL: Six residents has died in a fire at a Spanish retirement home in a suburb of Valencia early on Wednesday. Five people died in the home and a sixth died in hospital, the regional health department has reported.

The blaze started late on Tuesday night and took around two hours to bring under control, the fire department has said.

Around 70 residents were evacuated from the home in Moncada, a northern suburb of Valencia, Spain's third largest city. The home has rooms for 100 people.

Fifteen people were transferred to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Most of the residents of the burned area were relocated in spare space in the home and will be evacuated to other homes in the region during the day.

Town councillor and firefighter Martin Perez Aranda has disclosed that an unextinguished cigarette or an electrical fault linked to an oxygen bottle were among the possible causes being investigated.
