Over 80 Ostriches Escaped and Raced on Local Roads

INTERNATIONAL:​ Running cars are common to see around the world, but a group of running ostriches is much more of a rare sight. In Chongzuo of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, over 80 captive ostriches have escaped and raced on local roads, amazing the citizens in the early hours of Saturday.

living birds, but ostriches are flightless and are instead built for running. With its powerful legs, Ostriches can sprint in short bursts up to 70 kilometers per hour, and can maintain a steady speed of 50 kilometers per hour.

Their racing moments in the city were captured by a number of local citizens passing by. These flightless birds were then known to be at large from a local ostrich farm due to a careless worker who did not take care to lock the gate of the farm well.

Footage of ostriches running on roads soon went viral on the Internet and attracted the attention of the local police. With their help, the owner of the ostriches has been able to retrieve a number of his runaway birds.

No injuries of people have been reported due to this escape act.

Ostriches mainly depend on eating vegetables, and each of the escaped birds roughly weighs more than 100 kilograms, having a very high economic value. The local farm from where the ostriches escaped from has reportedly raised more than 300 ostriches
