UN Expresses Support for Cambodia Seeking Solution to Myanmar

PHNOM PENH: UN Special Envoy to Myanmar, Noeleen Heyzer, has expressed her desire to work with Cambodia to support a peaceful solution to the crisis in Myanmar.

Speaking in a video meeting with the Cambodian Foreign Minister on Tuesday, Noeleen Heyzer congratulated Cambodia on its chairmanship of ASEAN in 2022. She agreed with Cambodia’s decision that "the path to a political solution in Myanmar must be led by Myanmar and belong to Myanmar itself in order to be successful."

During the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhon, reiterated Cambodia's commitment to adhere to the practical and step-by-step approach to achieving progress in implementing the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated "Both sides (UN and Cambodia) have stressed the urgent need for cooperation to ensure the speedy and safe delivery of humanitarian aid to the people, including vaccinations to control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic."

ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar calls for an end to the violence, the establishment of a multilateral dialogue, the coordination of ASEAN special envoys, the provision of humanitarian assistance and the granting of special envoys to visit Myanmar.

The crisis in Myanmar stems from the military coup that took place on 1 February 2021, the arrest of State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other ruling party officials by the Myanmar Armed Forces for not recognizing the results of the November 2020 election, and handing over the leadership of the country to the Commander-in-Chief of the National Army, Min Ung Lang.

Prime Minister Hun Sen, who will be the chair of ASEAN in 2022, said that he will pay a visit to Myanmar on 7-8 January 2022 to help find a solution to the Myanmar crisis, and to also help Myanmar rejoin ASEAN.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Customs and Excise Building on the morning of 23 December 2021, the Prime Minister said, "Those who oppose me in Myanmar. I understand your feelings, burning a photo of Min Aung Hlaing and me. Do whatever you want, but you will later benefit from the restoration and return of peace, as well as the democratic process in Myanmar. This is a message that you will benefit from.”
