Mummy Exhibition in Shanghai Shows Golden Mummies of Egypt

INTERNATIONAL: A magnificent mummy exhibition was unveiled on Tuesday in Shanghai, where more than 100 exhibits including six golden mummies are on display, fascinating visitors have a glimpsed into the glorious culture of ancient Egypt.

The exhibition, titled "Meet Egypt: Golden Mummies", has opened at the Shanghai Jing'an Branch of "Meet You Museum" and is part of an international touring exhibition of artifacts from the Manchester Museum in the UK, featuring 107 objects from its vast Egyptology collections.

The most valuable exhibit is a female mummy believed to be aged around 20 years old, with the mask made of gold, the eyes formed with precious lapis lazuli gemstones, and clear Egyptian patterns and text have inscribed on the shroud. The mummy, which is among the most perfectly preserved, embodies an enchanting integration of ancient Egyptian and ancient Roman culture.

"We can see the Roman elements obviously hidden under her glittering golden mask, such as wavy curly hair and jewelry on her body," said Kong Bochuan, the exhibition planner.

The display also features 11 Fayum mummy portraits, which are a type of naturalistic painting on wooden boards attached to mummies of typically upper-class figures from those ancient times. There are also two portrait mummies, where the mummified body has been wrapped in shrouds.

The exhibition will last through until April 20 next year. Original works of art masters such as Raphael, an Italian renaissance painter and architect, and the celebrated Spanish artist Pablo Picasso will also be exhibited.

Organizers hope these attractions will draw great interest among visitors and help to broaden cultural perspectives.

"The event aims to introduce famous exhibitions and intellectual properties from famous international museums to China. Meanwhile, we are also presenting some well-known intellectual properties from Chinese museums to bring more excellent international and domestic art and culture to the people of Shanghai," said Li Jinsheng, Chairman of the China Arts and Entertainment Group.
