Thailand Allows Entry of 200 Cambodian Migrant Workers

BATTAMBANG: Authorities of Battambang province, along with officials of Chan Borei province, in Thailand, are working together to restore the flux of workers between the two nations. During the first week of this month, for the first time since the closing of borders due to Covid-19, officials from both nations have allowed 200 Cambodians to enter Thailand for legally working. The entrance of the 200 workers is a test run for further cooperation as an attempt of both countries to set relationships in the “new normal” context of Covid-19.

The head officer of Banlem International Port, Khim Tipmony, set at Battambang Province, has stated on Monday that according to the agreement between both nations, Thailand has allowed to bring Cambodian workers into Chan Borei Province through the international gate two days a week, between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Khim Tip Mony has stressed that in the first week of December, a total of 200 Cambodian workers were sent for testing, to check any challenges or infections of the Covid-19 virus. If any problem has been found during the first test runs, the Thai side will postpone the entrance of more Cambodian workers to enter legally in the country.

Deputy Governor of Kamrieng District in Battambang Province, Koeun Satya, said the allowance of sending Cambodian workers in Chan Borei Province, Thailand, was decided after a meeting to strengthen cooperation between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Kingdom of Thailand in early December. In case the first test operations run smoothly, the Thai government has announced its plans to accept 20,000 Cambodian to legally work in Chan Borei province. According to Director of Banlem International Port, Khim Tipmony, Cambodian workers allowed to enter in Thailand must meet certain conditions under the supervision of port officials and Department of Labor.

 All workers must have a company and employer to guarantee legal procedures. In addition, the workers must also have other attachments such as a border card, a vaccination card with at least a double inoculation, PCR test valid in between no more than 72 hours, as well as the obligation of being tested again when arriving in Thailand. If every paper has been analyzed and accepted by the border’s officials, all workers must quarantine for a week, followed by another Covid-19 PCR test before being finally allowed to work in Thai territories.
