Ministry of Public Works Seizes Over 700,000 Overweight Vehicles in 2021

PHNOM PENH: The Secretary of State and Chairman of the Standing Coordinating Committee of the Overweight Transport Inspection Committee, Seng Chhuon, chaired a meeting on Thursday to review the results of the report on overweight vehicle inspection that has been conducted in the first 11 months of 2021. The meeting was attended by the Director of the Cabinet, the Under Secretary of State of the Standing Coordinating Committee, the Chairman, the Vice-Chairman, members of the Secretariat, the Vice-Chairman of the Scale Station and 33 representatives of the Capital-Provincial Administration.

According to overweight vehicle inspection report, a total of 2,334,371 vehicles had been inspected, with 739,538 (31.68%) found to be overweight. Over 2,803 overweight vehicles were fined between 18 October to 9 December, 2021. The working group continued to seize 48 overweight vehicles, which had been detained for 48 years, following the high guidelines of the Prime Minister that authorized the release of 229 vehicles in September 2021.

The report stated that the Standing Coordinating Committee will continue to disseminate information about overweight vehicle standards more widely to vehicle owners, transport business owners, quarries, sand depots and the general public. This includes sharing information about overweight vehicle laws, especially the Law on Roads (Articles 26 and 60), Notification No. 049, and the proclamation on the tightening of additional measures for heavy vehicles driving on road networks across the country.

The Standing Coordinating Committee will also continue to enforce the law and prevent overcrowding without exception. The team will continue to install CCTV cameras, Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and Weigh in Motion Sensors at some stations to monitor the performance of officers on duty.

The report also included that due to the increased development of road infrastructure in the country and an increased need from provincial administrations, the Standing Coordinating Committee will set up two new weighing stations along National Road 33 in Kep and National Road No. 62 in Preah Vihear province, and also plan to build more weighing stations in Mondulkiri and Koh Kong in 2022.
