And…at least two car bombs, planted by criminal gangs, have exploded outside a prison in central Mexico on Wednesday during an attack to free nine inmates, local authorities have reported.

The armed group broke into the jail in Tula and has opened fire, injuring a guard and a police officer before detonating two car bombs that rammed into the walls of the prison in order to free nine jailed inmates. The car bombs were detonated in the vicinity of the jail to distract security forces while the operation was being carried out in the prison.

Among those who escaped is Jose Artemio Maldonado, better known as "El Michoacano," the alleged leader of Pueblos Unidos, a criminal group based in the Mexican state of Michoacan.

Local police, members of the National Guard and the Mexican army have fanned out looking for the escaped inmates, who are all still at large.
