Two Cambodian Women Rescued from Human Trafficking in Vietnam

PHNOM PENH: Two Cambodian women have been rescued in Vietnam after being tricked to work for a $1500 a month, entering the country illegally. Ministry of Foreign Affairs Koy Kuong says that the two women were smuggled into Vietnam on foot without passports. They were running through forests and rice fields at night. Then on 13 November, the Vietnamese border guards found the two women while doing regular border inspection and rescued them. They were brought to a quarantine centre, staying for 14 days.

According to Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Cambodian Embassy in Vietnam has received the two women on Saturday and arranged for them to be sent back to Cambodia. They are scheduled to be transported back by train from Hanoi on Monday and expected to arrive in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday afternoon. The Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City will send the women to the border, and the Svay Rieng provincial authorities and the Department of Social Affairs will be waiting at the Bavet-Moc Bai International Border Checkpoint.

The Cambodian Embassy has urged people, especially factory workers, to be extremely careful not to fall in human trafficking and when in doubt, always report to the nearest authorities.
