Cambodia Successfully Hosts ASEM13 with Leaders Commit to Stronger Relation

PHNOM PENH: The 13th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit has ended on Friday. Leaders across Asia and Europe regions have expressed their commitments to achieve a stronger relation. Prime Minister Hun Sen has encouraged ASEM leaders and partners to invest more resources to strengthen ASEM into a necessary and solid foundation that will effectively bring peace and prosperity to the future generations.

Prime Minister Hun Sen says during his closing speech that he is optimistic that the outcome of the meeting will be of intellectual value for contributing to the promotion of multilateralism and the rule of the ASEM process law. He says the leaders and partners are committed to further enhancing ASEM's role in promoting multilateralism and global governance as they increasingly address challenges.

They also expressed its full support for partisanship, which is the foundation of global peace, stability and prosperity. The Prime Minister says mutual respect, mutual understanding and trust are the guiding principles for multilateralism.

Prime Minister Hun Sen says, “We have mentioned the unprecedented challenges posed by Covid-19, which has a serious impact on public health and the socio-economic crisis. To address these challenges, we have agreed that solidarity, international cooperation and the promotion of multilateral vaccines are the key. Therefore, protecting the health and security of the people as well as promoting unity between states should be our priority.”

Another key point that was emphasized by Prime Minister Hun Sen is the commitment to green and low-carbon development to keep global warming levels below 1.5 degrees Celsius in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. He says supply of technology and finance to developing countries must be a priority.

Cambodia’s Prime Minister has concluded the 13the Asia-Europe Meeting Summit acknowledging that the past 25 years have provided a solid foundation for the Asia-Europe Partnership to move forward towards a brighter, more environmentally friendly and resilient future than before.
