Cambodia Highly Values Relations with the United States

The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, Mr. Prak Sokhonn and the Counselor of the U.S. Department of State, Mr. Derek Chollet have a phone conversation on Tuesday. The two leaders have discussed bilateral and regional issues of common interests and concerns.

Mr. Prak Sokhonn has emphasized that Cambodia highly values relations with the United States, regardless of having some strains, the two countries were able to managed to be on the right track , continuously expanding and flourishing in many areas including trade and investment, health, agriculture, culture, demining, peacekeeping, POW.MIA, repatriation, and Peace Corps Volunteers. He also expressed hope to see more constructive engagement and closer cooperation between the two countries, to be able to enhance more mutual confidence. Both sides have committed to further promote friendly ties and expand cooperation in all potential sectors.

The deputy prime minister have briefed Mr. Derek Chollet on Cambodia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2022 and the challenges that need to be carefully addressed in order to strengthen ASEAS centrality and resilience, advance ASEAN Community building efforts and maintain peace, stability and security within and beyond the Southeast Asian region. He has expressed his appreciation for the United States’ commitment to support ASEAN centrality and the success of Cambodia’s role as the Chair of ASEAN.

While Mr. Chollet has pointed out his views on regional and international development,including geopolitical competition, the situation in the Korean Peninsula , Myanmar, among others.
