Student Murder in Phnom Penh Not Politically Motivated

Phnom Penh Gendarmerie: The murder case of a student in Chroy Changvar district was solved by the Phnom Penh Armed Forces in less than 48 hours. The crime occurred in the early hours last Sunday in front of the entrance of Doeum Sral Market, Chroy Changvar. The victim was identified as a 31-year-old student Sin Khon who was killed with a machete.

According to witnesses, suspect immediately fled the crime scene after the murder.The case was initially believed to be a political one. This was after the crime circulated widely on social media and various media outlets, but people had mistakenly thought the victim was an activist of the former CNRP. This was soon dispelled as the true story started to emerge.

Deputy Commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces General Sao Sokha, headed up the investigation and the perpetrator was arrested within 48 hours. According to the accused, he did not intend to kill the victim, but only wished to scare him. He had a verbal conflict with the victim about being locked out of his home.

The dispute escalated and the perpetrator used a machete to assault the victim, severely wounding him in the leg. He did not realise the victim died from the wound, when he heard of the fatality he ran, but was soon captured. He awaits sentencing.
