National Assembly to Elect First Vice President on Thursday

PHNOM PENH: The Standing Committee of the National Assembly has conducted a meeting on Monday morning approving set of agendas for the sixth session of the National Assembly. The session will be convened on Thursday which will include the election of the first vice president. The seat of the National Assembly’s first vice president was vacated after the sudden death of Nguon Nhel two weeks ago.

The National Assembly will be making important decisions on Thursday.

In a meeting chaired by the President of the National Assembly Heng Samrin on Monday, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly approved six agendas for the sixth session of the National Assembly.

One is to elect the next first vice president after the death of its member Nguon Nhel because of illness.

The National Assembly has chosen Cheam Yeap to be the as the First Vice President of the National Assembly.

Article 87 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia states that the Vice President of the National Assembly will be responsible for managing the work of the President in any case of his absence. They will also assess the mandate of Un Bunham as a Member of Parliament for Kampong Thom constituency, and the election of Cheam Yeap as the First Vice President of the National Assembly.

Another is the election of Chheang Vun as a member of the National Assembly Committee on Economy, Finance, Banking and Auditing, and Chiep Sivorn as a member of the National Assembly Committee on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, Propaganda and Information.

The final three agendas concern the discussion and approval of the draft law on the ASEAN Protocol on Strengthening Dispute Resolution Mechanisms, the discussion and approval of the 2022 draft law on finance for management, and the discussion and approval of the 2020 draft law on the payment of the general state budget.
