Court Rejects Bail of 14 Activists Involved in Plot to Overthrow Government

PHNOM PENH: The presiding judge has rejected bail of the 14 activists on Wednesday involved in the plot of overthrowing the government. The defendants charged in line with the “9 November” incident was known as supporters of Sam Rainsy.

The 14 defendants who requested bail are: 1. Khuth Chrek, 2. Ngin Kheang, 3. Tbong Phary, 4. Keo Thai, 5. Thai Kunthea, 6. Chum Chan, 7. Nhem Vean, 8. Sun Thorn, 9. Khim Phana, 10. Sok Chantha, 11. Piet Mab, 12. Yim Sareth, 13. Coins, 14. Heng Chansothy, alias Thy. They asked for bail through lawyer Sam Sokong.

  According to court officials, four cases were heard in the past in connection with the November 9 plan, and a total of 139 defendants were summoned. Only 34 of the 139 defendants entered the trial, and these cases were re-incorporated into two cases.

A group of 139 former opposition members have been summoned to stand trial on charges of "conspiracy" and "inciting serious social unrest." The summons was posted by the authorities at the former headquarters of the former National Rescue Party on the afternoon of 14 November 2020.

On 1 November this year, Phnom Penh Municipal Court announced the verdict of the mastermind of the 9 November plot, including the conviction of Sam Rainsy. He was identified as the leader of the illegal rebel movement and was sentenced in absentia to 25 years in prison.

Sam Rainsy is also denied of the right to vote and stand for election. In addition to convicting Sam Rainsy, the court also sentenced Mu Sochua and Eng Chhay Eang to 22 years in prison, as well as Chou Long Somura, Men Sotheavrin, Ou Chanrith, Ho Van, Long Ry and Nuth Romduol to 20 years in prison.
