Thailand Eyes Reopening Border Checkpoints for Trade with Cambodia

PHNOM PENH: The Thai Government is eyeing to reopen border checkpoints with Cambodia for trading purposes. Although Prime Minister Hun Sen decided to fully remove quarantine and allowed the full reopening, borders between Cambodia and Thailand are still closed. The reason for the two countries to set a discussion where trade can continue.

Thailand Commerce Minister is aiming to boost trade with Cambodia again, allowing two border checkpoints to be reopen. Minister Jurin Laksanawisit says he is interested to open dialogues with Cambodian Royal Government in order to open the Tha Sen checkpoint in Trat province and the Ban Nong Ian border checkpoint in Sa Keo province. It’s an attempt to revive trade with the neighbor Cambodia, a trend that has been increasing in the past months after the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the economy of both nations.

As for today, Thailand has already reopened 48 checkpoints, but 49 others are still closed. From January to September this year, profits of 1.2 trillion bath were tallied for cross-border trade in Thailand. It’s an increase of 31% compared to the same period last year.However, overall border trade has fell around 1.7% compared to the previous year, a statistic the Thailand government is committed to improve.
