ASEM13 Summit, a Forum for Solving Regional and Global Challenges

PHNOM PENH: Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia,Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhon has stated that the hosting of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM13) is a special opportunity not only for Cambodia but to all member states, to be a forum for solving regional and global challenges.

The hosting of the ASEM13 Summit during this epidemic is a unique opportunity for Cambodia to promote this Summit as a forum for all ASEM leaders. Addressing regional and global challenges include public health, climate change, World Trade Organization (WTO) reform, youth and gender employment issues and more. This was highlighted by the Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhon in the publication of a research paper in support of the 13th Asia-Europe Meeting entitled "The 13th Asia-Europe Meeting: Multilateral Cooperation for a Future Resilient, Sustainable and Legal for ASEM.” on Thursday.

According to the Cambodian head of diplomacy, ASEM has made significant institutional changes over the past 25 years and has been involved in addressing complex regional and global issues that require cooperation between the countries of the two continents. However, ASEM has never been able to deal with the most serious social, economic and health crises on a global scale like today.

Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhon has added that the Covid 19 epidemic shows that the theme of the ASEM13 summit, "Strengthening Multilateralism for Joint Growth", is more important than ever. The effects of Covid 19 have permeated all parts of our society and recovery from the disease has been a long and difficult journey.
