The Barefoot Boy Wearing School Uniform with his Vaccination Card Wrapped in Plastic and Tied to his Shirt

PHNOM PENH: After getting much attention in social media, even caught the prime minister’s eyes, that barefoot boy, wearing a mask, and school uniform with his vaccination card wrapped in plastic and tied to his shirt in Siem Reap has finally identified. And got the much needed help in an instant from both government, private institutions and people.

The 7-year old boy named Kong Seiha is the son of poor parents who are both farmers from Siem Reap’s Thmat Pong Village. His parents are just renting a farmland in Svay Leu district, and do not even have a cellphone. During the pandemic and lockdowns, and despite of the boy’s young age, he has helped his parents work in the farm. Now, since the schools reopen, he was left under the care of his relatives for him to be able to go back to school.

The photo of the boy has circulated in social media and has prompted the prime minister to make suggestion to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport along with the capital and provincial governors to allow students to use copies of their Covid-19 vaccination cards instead of carrying the original ones with them to school in order to avoid damaging or losing them. The PM added, children have a lack of care and if they get caught in the rain it could make life difficult, so let the kids bring copies of their cards and the original cards should be kept at home. This is to avoid damaging or losing the original cards. Furthermore, if families could not afford to copy the cards then the schools would have to facilitate the copying.
