PM Officially Welcomes ASEAN & Partners' Leaders

Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Sen has officially welcomed the ASEAN leaders and its dialogue partners on Thursday as Cambodia received the ASEAN chairmanship gavel. Cambodia will start chairing the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations on the first day of 2022.

The Prime Minister says, “As the chair of ASEAN in 2022, Cambodia is committed to leading ASEAN to move forward under the theme ‘ASEAN ACT Addressing Challenges Together’ for harmony, peace and prosperity in the region as a whole. I look forward to welcoming all the leaders in Cambodia in 2022.”

Cambodia’s Prime Minister has commended Brunei’s Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah for his effective ASEAN leadership in 2021. Brunei will remain as the chair for the ASEAN until the end of this year. Prime Minister Hun Sen has acknowledged the fruitful accomplishments achieved by ASEAN under the leadership of Brunei and said that Cambodia will continue to achieve more in the next year.

He says, “As the chair of ASEAN in 2022, Cambodia will lead the joint efforts of ASEAN to achieve more important achievements, especially to promote the momentum of the process of building an ASEAN community with equity, strength and environment in line with the core spirit of ASEAN is a vision, an identity, and a community.”

The Prime Minister has highlighted three work priorities for the 2022 when he starts leading the group. First are the political and security pills. It will be followed by the economic pillar. Lastly, is the socio-cultural pillar. According to the Prime Minister, Cambodia will continue to mobilize support and cooperation to achieve the goal of building the three ASEAN communities from the perspective of the ASEAN Community by 2025.

The Prime Minister has concluded this week's event with a post on his social media account stating, "I am the only Prime Minister of Cambodia who holds ASEAN Chair for three times. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow citizens who supported me in leading Cambodia which made me able to participate in regional and international affairs through ASEAN."
