Thailand will Allow Transit of Goods Across Poipet Border Starting January

Banteay Meanchey: The Minister of Commerce of Thailand, Jurin Lak Sanaviseth has announced that from January, Thailand will allow the transit of goods across the Cambodian border of Stung Bot-Nang Ean in Banteay Meanchey. The Stung Bot-Nang Ean border checkpoint in Poipet city was mainly for tourists, but in April of 2019 Cambodian and Thai authorities have started the construction of a bridge and other administrative buildings in order to provide the transit of trucks.

Prime Minister Hun Sen’s advisor, Sok Sokretya, has met with Sanaviseth to discuss the further opening of the road, which is almost completed. The reunion follows Sokretya's request for the Thai side to expedite the opening of the gate in September. In response, Sanaviseth has announced that an official opening can be arranged on January 2022.

The opening of the Stung Bot-Nang Ean border is expected to turn Poipet into a highly developed area, a center for warehousing and distribution of goods and a special economic zone that creates potential businesses and investment projects between countries of the Greater Mekong subregion.
