Cambodia to Receive ASEAN Gavel on Thursday

PHNOM PENH: In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Cambodia will be the next ASEAN nation to lead the regional group. The transition ceremony is expected to be held this Thursday, when the wooden gavel will be given by Brunei’s Prime Minister to Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong told EAC News that although Cambodia will receive the ASEAN gavel from Brunei by the end of this week, Brunei will remain in charge until the end of 2021.

Cambodia became the 10th member of ASEAN in 30 of April of 1999, with the Kingdom leading the group twice: once in 2002 and the second time in 2012.
