Greek Island Crete Hit by 6.4-Magnitude Quake

INTERNATIONAL: A rare tsunami warning for the Mediterranean has been issued after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the Greek island of Crete. The small church of Agios Nikolaos, in the village of Xerokampos, was raised to the ground during the tremor. Some other buildings were damaged and thousands of people were seen leaving their homes in panic. No casualties have been reported, although aftershocks are ongoing.

Greece's Institute of Geodynamics put the epicentre slightly further east, in the sea, and said it was a 6.3 quake. Tremors were felt on other Greek islands and a tsunami warning has been issued. The quake struck the east coast of the island at a depth of 10km under the village of Palekastro.

Crete was hit last month by a 5.8-magnitude quake, which killed one person and damaged several buildings.
