Amendments to the Constitution Designating That a Prime Minister can Only Have Khmer Citizenship Scheduled for Assembly Meeting Later This Month

Phnom Penh: Amendments to the constitution requiring that the Prime Minister of Cambodia can only have Khmer nationality have been received by parliament and are scheduled to be approved by a plenary session later this month.

National Assembly spokesman, Leng Penglong, told EAC News that the draft constitution, which was approved by the cabinet on October 8th, has been sent to parliament. He added that according to the plan, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly will be meeting on October 14th and will send them to the expert committee to review next week.

According to Leng Penglong, due to the amendments, it must be stated as a matter of urgency, so the National Assembly may open its plenary session at the end of this month.

"Obviously, because this law is urgent, we have asked the expert committee to study it as soon as possible," he said.

Yesterday, The King of Cambodia, His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni, authorized the Prime Minister to continue the process of amending the draft Constitution, which requires the Prime Minister to have only one Khmer nationality after receiving a statement by the Constitutional Council declaring that this law is possible.

Draft amendment Constitutional Law on the of Article 19(New) 82(New) 106(New) (a) Article 119(new) and Article 137(new) of the Constitution and Article 3 and Article 4 of the Additional Constitution to ensure the normal functioning of national institutions was approved on October 8th by the Council of Ministers. The purpose of this law is to ensure the normal functioning of national institutions, as well as to show loyalty to the nation and avoid foreign interference.
