Angkor Warriors Have it All to Play For on Tuesday Night

Phnom Penh: Cambodia’s national football squad are on a high after their first leg win over Guam in their AFC playoff. They were hard at work in training on Monday, ahead of Tuesday’s second leg. At stake – not only a place in the 2023 Asian Football Championship finals in China - but also $100,000 in cash from Prime Minister Hun Sen. He offered the incentive on Sunday while congratulating the Angkor Warriors on their first leg win.

Cambodia went into the match as favourites and they didn’t disappoint. Guam came at them in wave after wave of attack, but the Angkor Warriors soaked up the pressure. Chan Vathanaka putting the winner in the net in the 26th minute.

The two sides face each other again at 12.30am on Wednesday morning, Cambodian time, at the same stadium in Bahrain. Cambodia only need a draw to move to the 2023 AFC finals and bag that $100,000 cash award from Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The 2023 Asian Championships will be the 18th edition of the tournament, which is organised by the Asian Football Confederation. China will host the finals between 16 June and 16 July 2023.
