Disney and Scarlet Johansson Resolve Lawsuit

INTERNATIONAL: Back in July, Scarlet Johansson took out a lawsuit against Disney. She alleged Disney had broken the contract, formerly agreed for the movie “Black Widow”, in which she plays the lead role. In the contract, it stated the Marvel movie should be launched in theatres before Disney could stream it on its online platform Disney+, but the film company opted to launch the new movie on both platforms.

The suit alleged that putting "Black Widow" on Disney+ reduced Johansson's financial stake in the film because she had agreed that her salary would be based, in a large part, on the film's box office takings. “Black Widow” has achieved $80 million in North American’s theatres and $60 million globally by the Disney+ platform in the first weekend of screening.

On Thursday, September 30th, Johansson announced she was "happy to have resolved our differences." The actress added she was “looking forward to continuing the collaboration in years to come”.

The chairman of Disney Studios Content, Alan Bergman, also showed appreciation for Johansson’s contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and said he looks forward to working together on a number of upcoming projects, including Disney's 'Tower of Terror’.

In July, Disney Studios denied that Johansson could lose any profit with the company’s decision in launching the movie at theatres as well as launching on Disney+.

“The release of 'Black Widow' on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional income, on top of the $20 million she has received to date”, announced the Studios spokesperson.

The case between Disney and Johansson shows a deeper conflict in Hollywood in so much as how entertainment and its profit have been changing with new platforms and the audience’s preferences for consuming it.
