Preah Vihear on Flood Alert

Preah Vihear: With floods in Southeast Asia being widely reported internationally, another province in the Kingdom, Preah Vihear, on the Thai border is preparing for the worst as water levels of the Stung Sen River have risen to dangerously high levels.

Preah Vihear Provincial Administration director, Kem Hoeung, says on Thursday the water level was already at 13.3 metres, well above the danger mark of 11.5 metres. He says most people living near the river have already moved to higher ground because they are aware of the flood risk during the rainy season.

He says so far, there has been a limited amount of damage, but has warned that could change if river levels continue to rise. Hoeung says a meeting of provincial officials will be held on Friday to discuss measures to prevent flooding and prepare to evacuate people in the case the situation becomes serious.

Meanwhile, in Banteay Meanchey, the situation is gradually easing as authorities continue to drain flood waters in the the Mongkul Borei area, according to Banteay Meanchey Provisional Governor, Oum Reatrey.
