National Assembly President Hails Constitution Day

Phnom Penh: The President of the National Assembly, Heng Samrin, has asked Cambodians to respect, protect and abide by the Constitution in order to build and promote the rule of law in the Kingdom. He has described the country as an “island of peace, glory and prosperity.”

His statement comes on the 28th Anniversary of Constitution Day, in honour of the day that the kingdom’s constitution was signed by King Norodom Sihanouk on 24 September 1993.

Heng Samrin says the constitution is the “supreme law and the foundation of the legal framework to lead the nation's development. The key points clearly stated in the Constitution are that Cambodia must strictly adhere to the constitutional monarchy, liberal democracy and pluralism. The Kingdom of Cambodia is an independent, sovereign, peaceful, neutral, non-aligned state.”

He says for the past 28 years, the National Assembly has fulfilled its constitutional mandate of legislating, monitoring the implementation of the law and representing the rights of citizens. He says the National Assembly has also worked to improve the living standards of the people and the development of the nation. He says over the past 28 years, the National Assembly has passed a “number of laws to meet the needs of society in politics, society, economy, trade and international relations.”
