Rescued Penguins Waddle Back into Ocean

INTERNATIONAL: Fourteen Magellanic penguins have been returned to the chilly seas off the coast of Argentina. They’ve been in rehabilitation since being rescued back in February. At the time, they were suffering from malnutrition and hypothermia.

The penguins were lucky to have been in such good hands for the past seven months. The Mundo Marino Foundation says the penguins were victims of over-fishing. A poor diet had left them weak and unable to protect themselves against the winter weather, but since February, they’ve been back on a proper diet and by last Saturday they were ready to be returned home.

After being packed into crates for the short ride to the beach, they were released in front of a small crowd. It was then just a short waddle to freedom. The penguins’ rescuers say they should now have the strength to make it through their next winter in the South Atlantic.
