Phnom Penh Fire Kills 80-Year-Old Woman

Phnom Penh: Two devastating fires raged homes in the capital on Sunday night. An 80-year-old woman was killed in one of the fires, which Phnom Penh firefighters responded to at around midnight. Just two hours earlier, another fire was reported that destroyed four homes.

People were awakened from their sleep when the first of the night’s fires broke out at Group 31, Village 3, in the Srah Chak commune of Daun Penh district. The capital’s Fire and Rescue Department say it started in a computer shop rented by Meas Bunsal. The building was made mostly of wood, so the flames quickly spread to neighboring houses. A total of four homes were destroyed, but luckily, there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

Two hours later though, another fire broke out across the capital, this time in Damnak Thom 4 village in the Stung Meanchey II commune of Meanchey district. The fire was quickly controlled within an hour and did not spread to the neighborhood, but the Fire and Rescue department says the home’s owner, 80-year-old Ros Himya was trapped by the flames and was killed.
