INTERNATIONAL: Football icon Pele has been moved out of intensive care and into a general room. The Brazilian underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his right colon last week. Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein hospital says the 80-year-old is in good clinical condition.
Three-time World Cup winner, Pele was admitted to hospital earlier this month after the tumour was found during a routine checkup. It is not yet known if the tumour is cancerous. Pele has suffered from hip problems for years and cannot walk unaided. His public appearances were already being cut back before the pandemic. Since then he has made only a few unnecessary trips from his home near Santos.
Pele tweeted in the hours after his surgery last week that he was doing OK and thanked fans for their support.
