PM to Discuss New Multi-Million Dollar “Unconditional Grant” from China

Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Sen is holding bilateral talks with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Sunday evening. To be discussed, a new $250-million “unconditional grant” from China. The Prime Minister did not give any further details and it’s not known if the $250-million would fund a single project or multiple ones, but it would dwarf the $150-million grant which funded the construction of the Morodok Techo National Sports Complex.

The facility was officially handed over to Cambodia on Sunday afternoon, at a signing ceremony presided over by the Prime Minister and the Chinese Foreign Minister. It was confirmed that the sports complex is the largest gift China has ever given to another country.

With China’s Foreign Minister leaving for Singapore on Monday, the Prime Minister suggested that the two hold talks on Sunday evening. The $250-million grant has been approved by Chinese premier Xi Jinping. It would seem the talks are going to be on the informal side, with the Prime Minister joking that he couldn’t have any alcohol from Monday, with him due to receive his booster shot of vaccine.

Further details about the $250-million grant and what it will be used for are expected to be released over the next few days.
