Cambodia and Thailand Hold Border Committee Meeting Ahead of Upcoming Summit

PHNOM PENH — Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, spokeswoman for the Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia, announced that the General Border Committee (GBC) Secretariat meeting began Monday evening in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The meeting, which runs through October 22, aims to advance cooperation and stability along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

The session commenced at 6 p.m. local time, with representatives from both countries exchanging documents and discussing preparations for the upcoming 2nd Special GBC meeting scheduled for October 23, 2025. The primary objectives are to enhance the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, promote practical cooperation to sustain peace and stability, and facilitate a swift return to normalcy in border areas.

Cambodian delegation leader Major General Nhem Boraden, chief of the GBC Secretariat, worked alongside Thailand’s Lieutenant General Nuttapong Praokaew, chief of the Thai GBC Secretariat, in leading their respective teams through discussions.

The ongoing GBC meeting is under the observance of several key international and regional stakeholders. These include the Heads of the Interim Observer Team (IOT) from Cambodia and Thailand, representatives from the U.S. Military Attachés Office in Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia, as well as Malaysian officials.

This dialogue underscores the continued commitment of Cambodia and Thailand to resolving border issues diplomatically, emphasizing dialogue, transparency, and mutual respect to promote long-term peace and stability in the region.
