PHNOM PENH, Oct. 19, 2025 — Prime Minister Hun Manet took to his social media accounts today to address recent rumors and misconceptions circulating among the public regarding Cambodia’s territorial sovereignty and recent peace negotiations.
In his post, Hun Manet responded to comments suggesting that the ceasefire agreement signed on July 28, 2025, and the upcoming peace treaty are part of a deal that may result in Cambodia losing land. He emphasized that these interpretations are misleading.
The Prime Minister clarified that the ceasefire agreement primarily sets out conditions and codes of conduct to prevent renewed fighting, not to resolve border or territorial issues. Likewise, he explained that the future peace agreement is aimed at fostering a stable environment and restoring diplomatic relations, not at ceding territory.
“Neither agreement mentions territorial or border issues,” he wrote, “but that does not mean Cambodia is relinquishing its legal rights or sovereignty over its land.”
He reaffirmed that land demarcation negotiations remain under the jurisdiction of the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Committee (JBC), which must resolve these issues peacefully and in accordance with existing treaties, conventions, and bilateral agreements.
“To my fellow Cambodians,” Hun Manet said, “I want to make it clear that Cambodia has not agreed to any agreement—whether the ceasefire or the future peace treaty—that would compromise our sovereignty or territorial integrity. Cambodia will always defend its rights and territorial sovereignty, in line with our legal obligations and international law.”
He concluded by reaffirming Cambodia’s unwavering commitment to sovereignty, peaceful resolution, and diplomatic dialogue, emphasizing that the government will continue to defend the nation’s interests.
The Prime Minister’s social media post aims to clarify misconceptions and reinforce Cambodia’s firm stance on land sovereignty amid ongoing diplomatic efforts.
