Opinion: IOT witness truce accord between Cambodia and Thailand

On Saturday, September 27, 2025, the Interim Observer Team (IOT), led by Malaysia, undertook an important mission to review and verify the border situation at Wat Prasat Ta Moan Sen Chey in Oddar Meanchey province, following the implementation of a ceasefire intended to promote harmony in the region. Unfortunately, rather than witnessing a commitment to peace, observers were met with alarming hostility: the Thai military launched an attack against Cambodian forces stationed at An Ses area of Preah Vihear province, casting once again a dark cloud over hopes for reconciliation.

Such hostile acts by the Thai military are not just alarming; they starkly violate the principles that underpin international relations and regional stability. In a global landscape increasingly focused on diplomatic resolutions and collaboration, the military's actions demonstrate a profound disrespect for both bilateral agreements and the foundational norms that govern relations among nations. This situation raises serious concerns about Thailand's commitment to peaceful coexistence in Southeast Asia.

The repercussions of this newly launched attack by thai army extend far beyond the immediate conflict. The initiation of military force against a neighboring country breeds instability and uncertainty, undermining trust and cooperation among nations in the region. This blatant display of lawlessness reflects poorly on the Thai military and casts a shadow on Thailand's reputation as a nation willing to engage in peace-building.

Once trust is damaged, it is challenging to restore. Neighboring countries depend on each other for stability and leadership, and each act of invasion or encroachment chips away at that delicate foundation. It is essential for Thailand to recognize that its military conduct has significant implications - not only for its relationship with Cambodia but also for its standing on the international stage.

A nation exhibiting such a disregard for discipline in its military operations risks being perceived as a destabilizing force. The credibility of Thailand as a responsible participant in the international community is at stake. It is crucial for Thailand's leadership to revisit its military approach and foster an environment centered on dialogue rather than confrontation.

The call for accountability has never been more pressing. International observers and regional leaders must unite to address this today’s armed attack and reaffirm their dedication to peace. The IOT's findings serve as an essential reminder that regional stability is a shared responsibility, and the actions of one nation can greatly impact its neighbors.Photos of Interim Observer Team (IOT), led by Malaysia, along with its members observing, verifying and reporting on the situation at Wat Prasat Ta Moan Sean Chey, Oddar Meanchey province on Saturday Morning, 27 September 2025

Looking forward, it is hoped that Thailand will take meaningful actions to address the concerns raised by its military. Commitment to dialogue, respect for sovereign boundaries, and adherence to treaties are paramount for establishing a peaceful coexistence that benefits all nations involved. The eyes of the world are upon Thailand; now is the time for it to align its actions with the fundamental principles that bind us all.
