U.S. Continues to Monitor Cambodia-Thailand Border Conflict Amid Ceasefire Agreement

August 19, 2025 — The United States remains deeply engaged in monitoring the ongoing border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, according to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In an interview with NBC on August 17, 2025, Rubio reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to stability in the region, stating, “The United States has been closely monitoring the border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.”

This development follows a recent diplomatic breakthrough aimed at de-escalating tensions. On July 28, 2025, the Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire during a special summit held in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The meeting was hosted by Malaysia and co-hosted by the United States, with participation from Chinese representatives. The agreement marked a significant step toward conflict resolution in the region.

The ceasefire was facilitated by efforts initiated by the U.S. under the Biden administration, following previous diplomatic engagements. The coordination of the summit underscores international concern and cooperation aimed at restoring peace and stability along the border.

The U.S. Department of State continues to observe the implementation of the ceasefire and monitor the situation for any signs of escalation. Both Cambodia and Thailand have committed to peaceful negotiations, with international partners calling for restraint and adherence to the agreements made in Putrajaya.
