Seven-Nation Inter-Agency Observation Team Conducts Border Monitoring Visit in Preah Vihear Amid Tensions Following Thai Military Activities

Preah Vihear Province, August 15, 2025 — On Friday, 15 August 2025, a seven-nation Interim Observer Team (IOT) conducted an important observation visit to the An Ses Border Checkpoint in Preah Vihear Province, Cambodia. The team was led by Colonel Nazlee bin Abdul Rahim, Malaysian Defence Attaché to the Kingdom of Cambodia, and included both resident and non-resident Defence Attachés from Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

The mission was carried out in accordance with established standards and protocols for international observation activities. It responds to recent reports concerning increased tensions along the border, notably the alleged installation and reinforcement of illegal barbed wire by Thai armed forces. These developments have raised concerns about potential violations of the ceasefire agreement and the commitments made during the Cambodia–Thailand General Boundary Committee (GBC) Meeting held on 7 August 2025 in Malaysia.

The deployment of the Observer Team follows rigorous adherence to established diplomatic and military observation protocols, including coordination with local authorities, verification procedures, and the use of neutral reporting standards. The visit aims to monitor and document the situation on the ground, ensure compliance with international agreements, and contribute to transparency and stability in the border region.

The recent activities by Thai forces, including the alleged unauthorized border infrastructure reinforcement, are being closely scrutinized to assess their impact on regional stability and ongoing peace processes. The IOT's visit is part of a broader effort by involved nations to uphold peace and facilitate diplomatic dialogue, adhering strictly to the agreed guidelines for border monitoring and conflict prevention.
