August 10, 2025 — In the midst of escalating tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang, Commander of Military Region 2, recognized the formidable strength of Cambodian troops when discussing recent operations near the disputed Ta Kwai Temple area. This assessment comes after multiple unsuccessful attempts by Thai soldiers to advance.
"Our soldiers have attempted to enter four times but were unsuccessful. They are strong, and there are landmines heavily laid around the area," Lt. Gen. Boonsin stated when questioned by the media about the situation at Ta Kwai, as reported by Khaosod English. The operations spanned four days across 11 different locations, with Thai forces now positioned 30 meters from Ta Kwai. Boonsin noted the strategic advantage held by Cambodian troops due to their proximity to the temple.
Despite these challenges, Lt. Gen. Boonsin expressed determination, declaring, "I confirm that this is our castle, and we must reclaim it." He also addressed the status of the Ta Muen Thom Temple, revealing plans to potentially close it following recent clashes. "We are considering whether to permanently close it or only for certain periods, which a committee must consider again," he added.
When asked about the morale of troops stationed at the border, Lt. Gen. Boonsin painted an optimistic picture. "The young soldiers have good morale. Those who get injured, as soon as they recover, ask to go back to the front line," he said. With 51 days remaining in his service, Boonsin affirmed his commitment to his duties and confidence in the incoming commander.
The Ministry of National Defense of Cambodia has issued an official statement referring to recent developments along the Thailand-Cambodia border, condemning provocative actions by the Thai military and reaffirming Cambodia’s steadfast commitment to peace and adherence to bilateral agreements. In the statement, the Spokesperson of the Ministry clarified that on August 10, 2025, General Boonsin Padklang, Commander of Military Region 2 of Thailand, announced his retirement plan, which is set to occur in 51 days. Significantly, General Boonsin declared his intention to seize Ta Krobei Temple, which Cambodia recognizes as under its legitimate control, and to declare the closure of Ta Muen Thom Temple, also within Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Cambodia regards this announcement as a blatant provocation and evidence of a premeditated attempt to violate its sovereignty. The statement emphasizes that these actions directly contravene the ceasefire agreement reached during the special meeting on July 28, 2025, and undermine the spirit of the extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting held on August 7, 2025, in Malaysia. During that meeting, both countries agreed that neither side would move their troops or patrol beyond their established positions, maintaining peace along the border.
Amid these developments, Pravit Rojanaphruk, a notable commentator, questioned the Thai government's control over the military and the relevance of the ceasefire agreement. "So, can the government no longer control the military? Does the ceasefire agreement mean nothing? Is that why the Commander of the Second Army Region dares to speak like this, saying he will ‘reclaim’ Ta Kwai Temple while the government remains silent?" Rojanaphruk remarked.
The situation remains tense as both sides navigate this sensitive period, with international observers keeping a close watch on the evolving dynamics at the border. The broader implications for regional stability and bilateral relations between Thailand and Cambodia continue to unfold.
