BREAKING : Cambodia Responds to Thai Military Activities and Reiterates Commitment to Peaceful Resolution

Phnom Penh, August 10, 2025 — The Ministry of National Defense of Cambodia has issued an official statement referring to recent developments along the Thailand-Cambodia border, condemning provocative actions by the Thai military and reaffirming Cambodia’s steadfast commitment to peace and adherence to bilateral agreements.

In the statement, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense of Cambodia clarified that on August 10, 2025, General Boonsin Padklang, Commander of Military Region 2 of Thailand, announced his retirement plan, which is set to occur in 51 days. Significantly, General Boonsin declared his intention to seize Ta Krobei Temple, which Cambodia recognizes as under its legitimate control, and to declare the closure of Ta Muen Thom Temple, also within Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Cambodia regards this announcement as an blatant provocation and evidence of a premeditated attempt to violate its sovereignty. The statement emphasizes that these actions directly contravene the ceasefire agreement reached during the special meeting on July 28, 2025, and undermine the spirit of the extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting held on August 7, 2025, in Malaysia. During that meeting, both countries agreed that neither side would move their troops or patrol beyond their established positions, maintaining peace along the border.

Cambodia stressed its firm stance on peaceful resolution of border disputes and called on Thailand to sincerely uphold the commitments made during recent diplomatic negotiations. The country urges mutual respect and restraint to restore stability and peace for the peoples of both nations.

Furthermore, Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defense called on the international community, especially the partner countries that contributed to the achievement of the ceasefire, to support efforts towards peace. It also urged Thailand to abide by the ceasefire agreement not just in words, but through concrete actions—specifically calling for the immediate removal of barbed wires that were covertly laid on Cambodian territory, which Cambodia regards as a clear violation of the agreement.

The spokesperson reaffirmed that the overall situation along the border remains calm at present. Both sides must continue efforts to preserve this peace, prevent actions that could escalate tensions, and foster good neighborly relations—aspirations shared by both nations and strongly supported by the international community.

Cambodia remains committed to peaceful diplomacy, adherence to international agreements, and the pursuit of stability in the region. The government continues to call for restraint and constructive dialogue to resolve ongoing disputes and maintain peace and prosperity in Southeast Asia.
