Thailand Taps Former Beauty Queen Panadda Wongphudee to Counter Cambodia’s Defence Spokeswoman
BANGKOK — Thailand has appointed former actress Panadda Wongphudee as spokeswoman for the Ad Hoc Centre for the Thailand–Cambodia Border Situation, with a mandate to respond to what Thai officials describe as “fake news” from Cambodia.
Deputy Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit announced the appointment on Friday at Government House, saying the role was created to directly address public statements made by Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, spokeswoman for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence.
“This appointment is to counter Lt. Gen. Maly,” Nattaphon told reporters, adding that the centre needed a female spokesperson capable of issuing rapid responses.
Thai authorities have accused Lt. Gen. Maly of disseminating misinformation aimed at garnering international support for Cambodia and undermining Thailand’s image. She has been a prominent figure in Cambodia’s defence communications since the two countries began five days of armed clashes along their shared border on July 24.
Panadda Wongphudee, 45, is a former Thai actress, model, and beauty queen who won the Miss Thailand World title in 2000. She went on to represent Thailand at the Miss World pageant in the same year and later built a successful career in television dramas, films, and hosting. Known for her public speaking skills and media presence, Panadda has also been involved in charity work and social campaigns. In recent years, she has taken on roles outside entertainment, including public relations and advocacy projects.
The fighting concluded with a ceasefire agreement reached on July 28, though tensions between Bangkok and Phnom Penh remain high.
