Phnom Penh, August 8, 2025 — Cambodian Senate President and former Prime Minister Hun Sen issued a strong response on social media today following reports that a university in Thailand had voted to revoke his honorary degree.
“It is quite ridiculous,” Techo Hun Sen wrote. “Today, I heard that a university in Thailand, whose name I can’t even recall, held a vote to revoke my honorary degree.”
He went on to say that such action was unnecessary, as he had already symbolically rejected the honor more than a decade ago.
“I discarded that degree in the toilet back in 2008, when Thailand deployed its military to invade Cambodia’s Preah Vihear Temple,” he stated. “Your degree has no value for me to keep.”
Techo Hun Sen further emphasized that he has never placed importance on that recognition, asserting that his education and leadership were shaped by the Cambodian people and national institutions.
“Hun Sen’s intellect was not born from your institution. Hun Sen’s intellect comes from the teachings of the Cambodian people and the schools of Cambodia,” he concluded.
The university in question has not yet issued a public statement regarding the reported vote.
