Japan Denies Providing Combat Drones to Thailand; China Reaffirms Support for Peace in Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute

Phnom Penh-Bangkok, August 4, 2025 —The Embassy of Japan has issued a statement categorically denying rumors that the Japanese government plans to provide combat drones to Thailand. The embassy clarified that this information is false, emphasizing that Japan has neither made such arrangements nor received any requests from Thailand for military equipment. The Japanese government’s assistance remains strictly limited to areas unrelated to international conflict, focusing instead on humanitarian and developmental initiatives. The embassy urged the public and media to refrain from spreading misinformation and fake news regarding Japan’s aid policies.

Japan's government underlines its strong commitment to supporting peace and stability in the region. It affirms that the government places the highest importance on the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, aiming for an early restoration of peace and normalcy. Japan sincerely hopes that the Cambodian people can resume peaceful daily life promptly, contributing to regional stability.

In a related development, China has also issued statements concerning the ongoing border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy in Thailand clarified reports claiming that China donated drones to Cambodia to support border operations. These reports have been verified as false; the images circulated were taken during a flight demonstration event held by China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation (CATIC) in Cambodia in January 2024 and bear no relation to the current situation.

The Chinese side reaffirmed its stance of active de-escalation efforts since the outbreak of border tensions. China emphasizes that it does not seek any direct gains from its involvement but supports ASEAN’s role in facilitating a political solution through dialogue and diplomacy. China also expressed its willingness to maintain close communication with regional partners, including Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia, to help cement the ceasefire and restore peace and stability in the region.

These clarifications from Japan and China underscore the importance of accurate information in managing regional security and reaffirm the shared commitment of regional powers to support peaceful resolutions of the conflict.
