Cambodia Confirms Border Calm Amid Thai Violations and Calls for International Support to Maintain Peace

Phnom Penh : On August 6, 2025, the Ministry of Defense of Cambodia issued a statement confirming that the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border remains calm. During a press conference held by the Royal Government Spokesperson's Unit, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata reported that there have been no armed clashes in the border region, including the An Ses area, as of 6:00 p.m. on August 5.

The statement comes amid ongoing tensions following alleged violations of a ceasefire agreement that took effect at noon on August 28, 2025. Cambodia’s forces removed barbed wire installed by Thailand in the An Ses area on the evening of August 5, after Thai troops reportedly entered Cambodian territory and carried out activities such as trench digging and sewer installation despite Cambodian protests. Cambodian authorities confirm that they engaged in discussions with their Thai counterparts before dismantling the barbed wire between 3:14 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on August 5.

Lieutenant General Maly emphasized that Cambodian forces maintain control of the area and are committed to a peaceful resolution. “Cambodia’s stance remains rooted in exercising patience and diplomacy, aiming for peaceful borders characterized by friendship, cooperation, and development,” he stated. He also reaffirmed the country's dedication to protecting its territorial integrity and condemned false accusations by Thailand regarding the border dispute.

Mr. Pen Bona, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister and Head of the Royal Government Spokesperson’s Unit, echoed this sentiment, calling on the international community to recognize the truth. He asserted that Thailand’s recent claims and accusations are unfounded and intended to divert attention from their unprovoked actions. “The international community is well aware that Thailand cannot simply make false claims without repercussions. We must stay united behind our armed forces and leaders who are experienced and mature in safeguarding national sovereignty,” Mr. Bona said during a briefing on the ceasefire’s progress.

He criticized ongoing propaganda efforts by Thai military and media outlets, which, according to him, continue to spread misinformation portraying Cambodia as the aggressor. “The allegations that Cambodia fired first or initiated hostilities are false and contradicted by the observable facts on the ground,” he added. Mr. Bona highlighted that Cambodia’s leadership has made significant sacrifices to secure peace and stability after years of conflict and war, emphasizing that the country’s recent decade of peace under the “win-win” policy has brought prosperity and development to the Khmer people.

Furthermore, Mr. Bona questioned the legitimacy of Thailand’s accusations, stating, “Where is the conflict in Cambodia? Where is the Cambodian leadership being provoked or attacked first? The facts are clear, and the Cambodian people, both domestically and internationally, stand united in support of their government and armed forces.”

Regarding Thailand’s recent legal actions against Cambodia, Chum Sounry, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, characterized these moves as an attempt to divert public and international attention from Thailand’s aggressive policies and violations of international law. Speaking at the same press conference, Chum Sounry accused Thailand of trying to deflect criticism concerning civilian casualties and ongoing border violations. “This legal action is baseless and serves only to distract from their hostile policies and violation of ceasefire agreements,” he said.

On August 5, 2025, Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai also responded to Cambodia’s accusations by stating that Thailand is considering legal avenues to respond to alleged violations of sovereignty that resulted in casualties and damage. Authorities are preparing to pursue criminal and civil cases both domestically and internationally, with the aim of addressing what they describe as unlawful military actions.

The situation remains a source of concern for regional stability, with Cambodia maintaining a position of restraint and diplomacy while safeguarding its territorial integrity. The government calls for continued international support and calls on all parties to uphold the ceasefire to prevent further escalation.
