Phnom Penh, August 3, 2025 — The Ministry of National Defense of the Kingdom of Cambodia has issued an official statement regarding recent reports of movements by the Thai military along the Cambodian border.
According to a press release from the Ministry's spokesperson, at approximately 10:49 a.m. today, credible intelligence indicated that the Thai military, in coordination with Thai authorities, has directed remaining civilians in the Surin Province border area to evacuate by the evening. The statement also claims that the Thai military is planning to launch military operations along the border, targeting key locations including Tamone Thom Temple, Ta Krabey Temple, Preah Vihear Temple, and the Anseh area.
These purported plans, if confirmed, are said to be in violation of Cambodia's territorial sovereignty and contravene the ceasefire agreement signed by both nations on July 28, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The agreement, witnessed by representatives from Malaysia, the United States, and China, aimed to de-escalate tensions and promote peaceful resolution of border disputes.
The Cambodian government expressed concern that these potential attacks are scheduled to occur ahead of an upcoming Extraordinary Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) set to convene on August 7, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur. The Ministry emphasized that such military actions undermine regional stability and peace efforts.
Cambodia has called on the international community to intervene proactively to prevent possible escalation. The Ministry urges the Thai government to cease any aggressive actions immediately and to uphold the spirit of the ceasefire agreement, fostering peaceful dialogue and stability along their shared border areas.
The Cambodian government maintains its commitment to peaceful resolution and regional security and continues to monitor the situation closely.
