BREAKING: Cambodia to Facilitate ASEAN Defence Observer Team Visit Along Border Regions in Support of Ceasefire Agreement

Phnom Penh, August 3, 2025 — Cambodia announced today the deployment of an ASEAN Defence Attaché Observer Team to monitor the implementation of the recent ceasefire agreement with Thailand, underscoring regional efforts to restore peace along their shared border.

In an official letter from the Ministry of National Defense, Deputy Director General Lieutenant General PHAT Vibolsopheak confirmed Cambodia’s commitment to the ceasefire reached on July 28, 2025, in Malaysia. He stated that Cambodia has earnestly endeavored to implement the principles of the agreement.

The Department of International Relations within Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defense will facilitate the ASEAN Defence Attaché Observer Team (Interim), led by Malaysian Defense Attachés. The team will include representatives from Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam.

On August 3, 2025, the ASEAN Military Observer Group (Interim), composed of these six countries, departed Phnom Penh for the affected border areas in Oddor Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces. Led by Colonel NAZLEE BIN ABDUL RAHIM, Malaysia’s Defense Attaché to Cambodia, the delegation traveled to regions impacted by recent armed clashes between the Cambodian and Thai militaries. The mission aims to monitor and verify the ceasefire's implementation and will last for a full two weeks.

The visit follows the outcomes of a special meeting held on July 28, 2025, in Malaysia, which culminated in a mutual agreement to cease hostilities. The participation of these partner countries reflects a shared aspiration to ensure the success and sustainability of peace efforts, aiming to restore stability, foster cooperation, and promote development for the peoples of both nations.

The Cambodian government reaffirmed its continued cooperation and commitment to regional peace and stability, welcoming these efforts as a step towards de-escalating tensions and promoting diplomatic relations in Southeast Asia.

The letter and details of the mission were also shared with the Defence Attaché Office at the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Bangkok, Thailand.

This coordinated regional initiative highlights ongoing efforts by Southeast Asian nations to maintain peace and stability, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in conflict resolution.
