Cambodia Denies Thai Media Allegations of Drone Crossings and Urges Troop Return

Phnom Penh, August 3, 2025 — The Cambodian Ministry of National Defense has dismissed accusations from Thai media that Cambodia has used drones to penetrate Thai airspace. During a press conference this morning, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, spokesperson for the ministry, labeled the claims as unfounded and misleading.

Thai media has repeatedly reported accusations that Cambodia was the first to fire weapons, target civilians, and breach the ceasefire agreement—claims that Cambodia insists are exaggerated or fabricated. Socheata criticized a recent circulated video that Thai sources claimed showed a Cambodian drone entering Thai territory, describing it as “fake and distorted content.” She called on Thailand to stop such provocative actions and rhetoric.

“Thailand should immediately cease these baseless allegations,” Socheata said. “We also urge Thailand to refrain from flying drones into Cambodian airspace. Any violation of our sovereignty will be met with appropriate measures.”

The spokesperson also reiterated Cambodia’s call for the swift return of 18 Cambodian soldiers currently in Thai custody. She confirmed that only two wounded soldiers have been returned so far, on August 1, after being held since July 29. “Cambodia continues to negotiate carefully through diplomatic channels and with the assistance of mediators, including Malaysia, to ensure the safe and prompt return of our remaining personnel,” Socheata stated.

Furthermore, she emphasized Cambodia’s commitment to peace. Sounry Chum, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed regret over recent comments from Thailand, stating that they do not reflect the reality on the ground. He called on Thailand to align its words with tangible actions, respect the ceasefire, and immediately release Cambodian soldiers under Thai custody.

“Cambodia remains steadfast in its efforts to resolve issues peacefully, in accordance with international law and previous agreements,” Sounry said. “We call on Thailand to show genuine commitment by engaging sincerely in negotiations and avoiding unilateral or provocative steps.”

He reaffirmed Cambodia’s openness to dialogue and willingness to work with Thailand and international partners to achieve a peaceful, sustainable resolution for the benefit of both nations. Cambodia emphasizes its dedication to maintaining stability along the border while closely monitoring developments.
